Carved Stamps and Exploring Henna

Our friend Sudha brought back these lovely hand carved stamps from India.  India is a beautiful  country that not many of us get to experience.  It is brimming full of culture, many groups of people with many different beliefs.  Come experience only one small part of India and explore the tradition of Henna on hands at Bare Knuckle Arts.

Exploring Henna  Sunday June 24th 1-3pm Learn about the 5,000-year-old cultural practice of Henna tattooing! The art of applying henna to the hands and feet is known as Mehndi, and is traditionally used for celebrations and rites of passage.  We will practice on paper, come up with a design and apply it with a Henna cone to our hands and arms.  The design can last up to 6 weeks but will eventually disappear.

Type Hype and Why Letterpress Matters-Gallery Night May 4th 5-9pm

Perhaps it is partly a reaction to our ever evolving digital world but a few years back one might say that Letterpress printing was a dying craft.  It has had a revival and validation in the art world.  There is something so beautiful about taking old wood or metal type, methodically setting it, inking it, and printing it on a machine that was made before your Grandma was born.

Join us, Bare Knuckle Arts on May 4th MMoCA Spring Gallery night to celebrate the handmade paper and letterpress prints created by Professor Kerri Cushman.  Cushman is an artist and educator at Longwood University in Virginia, who specializes in handmade paper, artist books, and printmaking.

Come check out the type hype with refreshments and an art activity for the kids from 5-9pm at Bare Knuckle Arts, 1949 Winnebago St. Madison WI

Solstice Saturday Family Yoga/Art Workshop with Jessica Becker

This is Jessica Becker and we are so excited to have her teaching a Solstice Saturday Family Yoga/Art Workshop.  June 23rd, please join us at Bare Knuckle Arts and here is a bit more about our friend.

Jessica’s mother introduced her to yoga with a video over twenty years ago. She didn’t think too much about it, but knew it felt good, and found herself practicing every day. Now a mother of two young children, she still practices daily. Yoga has served her through the changes and challenges of life, helping her heal from a spinal injury and evolve into her role as a mother. She has learned from many great teachers, including Sri K. Pattabhi Jois (Guruji), and received 200-hour Alignment Yoga Teacher Certification with Scott Anderson in 2003. Her studies in the past two years have been with Amie Heeter in the Para Yoga tradition. She is grounded, patient, and genuinely committed to the inherent wisdom and brilliance of the practice. Her classes include laughter and exploration within a dependable framework that encourages students to release anxieties and competitiveness. Jessica teaches Mother/ Daughter Yoga Course classes regularly at Main Street Yoga.

Junkyard Portraits at Adams Elementary in Janesville WI.

Adams Elementary in Janesville, WI hosted Bare Knuckle Arts in a 2 week artist residency this March 2018.  Students created a collaborative art project with STEAM emphasis.  Each student worked to develop their skills as they were using new tools.  The residency began by introducing the artists Dr. Evermore, El Anatsui, and Shinque Smith.  Artists from around the world that use upcycled materials to create art.  Students were very engaged in arts exploration as they thought deeply about what happens to the plastic we produce, the metal we use or can re-use and the best way to re-create with unusual materials.  Led by Amy Mietzel and Adams Art Educator Mandy Zdrale they did some creative thinking and problem solving as well as learning how to use tools.  It was a super positive experience for all involved.  Click here for more great photos of their work.

Bullet Journals are the New Mindfulness Inspired Method-They Begin with Blank Pages and Transform into the Perfect Planner. Join us for a BUJO Workshop

Make Your Own Bullet Journal Workshop

Bullet journaling, or BuJo as it is commonly called, is all the rage right now. If you like to stay organized, without having multiple notebooks, post-its, lists, planners, then a bullet journal is perfect for you. In this workshop, we will start from scratch, create paste paper covers, bind a journal and then begin to set up layouts and spreads.  Colored pens, collaged images, washi tape will help us create a mighty mash-up of a running to-do list, a planner, or a life log. The best part is that bullet journaling can be used to make you feel productive for doing virtually anything, no matter how important—or unimportant—it might seem to other people. It is made for people who like old-fashioned paper and pens.  Sunday May 20th 1-4pm
